A refractometer measures the refractive index of a liquid, which is affected by the concentration of dissolved solids or additives. By placing a drop of the metalworking fluid on the refractometer’s prism and measuring the refraction of light passing through it, the refractometer provides a reading that correlates to the concentration of the coolant additives.
